Inks
left: Winsor & Newton Black Indian Ink, ~$8 for 30ml. A good drawing ink for nibs, I’m really into the inks with shellac finishes. This one’s water soluble, so it’ll bleed if you do a wash over it. Also recommended by Hiromi Ueyoshi.
middle: Gensou Black-red, super condensed 200ml, ~$11 for 500ml. A good ink to use with brushes. It’s really thick, really dark, and I usually dilute it with water, but it’s AMAZING! Probably my favorite ink to use at the moment, it’s kind of like having sex with your paper, especially if you’re using something fancy (i.e.: arches 300 lbs hot press watercolor, or any kind of 3-ply rice paper). Also, has a shellac finish. This ink is not waterproof.
right: Speedball Super Black Waterproof India Ink, ~$13 for 16 fl oz. This is a pretty standard ink that I like to use with nibs. It’s kind of transparent if you use a brush with it, but it dries faster than the other two inks that I have, AND it’s waterproof. Also recommended by Tom Toye.
far right: 91% rubbing alcohol, for keeping your shit clean, especially if you’re prone to smearing like me.
